The Yellow Vitamin

Riboflavin is bright yellow-orange. The name comes from "ribose", a sugar in its structure, and "flavus", the Latin word for yellow. It is so strongly coloured that it is also used as a natural food colour (E101). Anyone who takes a B-complex supplement may notice their urine turning bright yellow soon afterwards. This is harmless and simply shows the body is passing out riboflavin it does not need.

Riboflavin is found in milk, curd, eggs, meat, green leafy vegetables, mushrooms and fortified cereals. It is broken down by light, which is why milk used to be sold in opaque bottles rather than clear glass.

How Riboflavin Works

In the body, riboflavin is converted into two coenzymes, FMN and FAD. These help enzymes break down fats, carbohydrates and proteins, and they also help activate other B vitamins, including B6 and folate. Riboflavin is needed to recycle glutathione, one of the body's main antioxidants.
