Provitamin A Tablet
Part of our Nutraceuticals range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Provitamin A Tablets are supplements that provide carotenoids the body can convert into vitamin A as it needs them. The main provitamin A carotenoids are beta-carotene, alpha-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin, found in orange, yellow and dark green fruits and vegetables. They contribute to normal vision, skin and immune function once converted.
Arizone International manufactures and supplies Provitamin A Tablets, including beta-carotene and mixed carotenoid formulas, for nutraceutical brands and private label businesses.
Provitamin A vs Preformed Vitamin A
There are two kinds of vitamin A in the diet. Preformed vitamin A (retinol and its esters) comes from animal foods such as liver, eggs and dairy, and is ready to use. Provitamin A carotenoids come from plants and are converted into vitamin A in the gut and liver. The key advantage of provitamin A is that the body regulates the conversion: when vitamin A stores are full, conversion slows down. This makes carotenoids a gentler way to support vitamin A status.
Conversion varies from person to person. As a general guide, about 12 micrograms of beta-carotene from food, or 2 micrograms from supplements in oil, provide 1 microgram of retinol activity equivalent (RAE).
Main Provitamin A Carotenoids
- Beta-CaroteneThe most important provitamin A, found in carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, mangoes and spinach.
- Alpha-CaroteneFound in carrots and pumpkin, with about half the provitamin A activity of beta-carotene.
- Beta-CryptoxanthinFound in papaya, oranges, tangerines and red peppers.
Applications
- Vitamin A support supplements from plant sources
- Mixed carotenoid antioxidant tablets
- Eye health formulas with lutein and zeaxanthin
- Skin wellness supplements
- Vegetarian multivitamins
- Private label vitamin ranges
Formulation Notes
Carotenoids are sensitive to light, heat and oxygen. For tablets, we use stabilised beadlets or microencapsulated powders, often from natural sources such as the algae Dunaliella salina or palm fruit, or nature-identical beta-carotene. Labels can state the carotenoid amount and the equivalent vitamin A activity, following local rules.
Safety Notes
Provitamin A from food is considered very safe. However, high-dose beta-carotene supplements have been linked with a higher risk of lung cancer in smokers and people exposed to asbestos, based on two large trials (ATBC and CARET). Many regulators require a warning for smokers on high-dose products. Very high intakes may give the skin a harmless yellow-orange tint called carotenodermia. Pregnant women should follow medical advice on vitamin A sources.
Quality Considerations
- Carotenoid source and assay by HPLC
- Stability over shelf life
- Beadlet or powder quality and antioxidant system
- Heavy metals, microbiology and solvent residues
- Opaque packaging and Certificate of Analysis
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Beta-carotene is sensitive to light and air, so beadlet forms and protective coatings help keep it stable. Many markets require a warning that smokers should avoid high-dose beta-carotene.
Beta-carotene gives tablets an orange colour.
