Marshmallow Powder is made from the dried root of Althaea officinalis, the marsh mallow plant. When the powder meets water, it releases a soft, slippery mucilage, which is why marshmallow root has been used for centuries in soothing throat teas and cough syrups, and why it has become a favourite "slip" ingredient in natural hair care today.

Arizone International supplies Marshmallow Root Powder and cut root for herbal tea brands, cough syrup and lozenge makers, hair-care and cosmetic companies, wholesalers and exporters.

The Original Marshmallow

Althaea officinalis is a tall perennial with velvety leaves and pale pink flowers that grows in damp meadows and salt marshes across Europe and western Asia. Its name comes from the Greek word "althaino", meaning to heal. The fluffy sweet we know as marshmallow was originally made in nineteenth-century France by whipping the root's sticky sap with sugar and egg whites. Modern marshmallows use gelatin instead, but the name remains.

Why Mucilage Matters

The root contains a high share of mucilage, a mixture of polysaccharides that swells in water into a smooth, slippery gel. This gel forms a gentle coating on surfaces it touches. In herbal tradition, it is used to soothe a dry, tickly throat and an irritated stomach. In hair care, the same slippery texture helps combs and fingers glide through wet hair, reducing tangles and breakage.

How to Prepare Marshmallow Root

Traditional herbalists often prepare marshmallow as a cold infusion: the root or powder is soaked in cool water for several hours, then strained. Cold water extracts the mucilage while leaving behind much of the starch, giving a smoother, thicker liquid than hot water does. For hair, the powder can be simmered briefly in water and strained to make a slippery rinse or added to hair masks.

What Marshmallow Root Contains

  • Mucilage PolysaccharidesThe main active component, often a large share of the root.
  • Pectin and StarchAdding body and softness.
  • Flavonoids and Phenolic AcidsPresent in smaller amounts.

Applications

  • Throat-soothing herbal teas and syrups
  • Cough lozenges and herbal pastilles
  • Digestive comfort blends
  • Detangling hair rinses, curl creams and conditioners
  • Moisturising creams, lotions and after-sun gels
  • DIY hair masks and natural beauty products

Safety Notes

Marshmallow root is generally well tolerated. Its mucilage can slow the absorption of other medicines, so it is usually taken at least an hour apart from them. People with diabetes should monitor blood sugar, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should seek advice before using concentrated products.
