Kutaja Powder
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Kutaja Powder is made from the dried bark of Holarrhena pubescens (formerly Holarrhena antidysenterica), a small tree known in India as kurchi or kutaj. In Ayurveda, Kutaja is the classic herb for loose stools and intestinal comfort, and it is the main ingredient in well-known formulas such as Kutajarishta and Kutajghan Vati.
Arizone International supplies Kutaja Bark Powder and Indrajav (kutaja seeds) for Ayurvedic manufacturers, digestive wellness brands, wholesalers and exporters.
About Kutaja
Holarrhena pubescens is a deciduous shrub or small tree found in dry forests across India, from the Himalayan foothills to central and southern India. It has fragrant white flowers and long, thin, paired seed pods. Its old botanical name, antidysenterica, directly reflects its traditional use against dysentery. The bark is the main part used, while the seeds, called Indrajav or Indrayava, are used separately in Ayurveda.
Kutaja in Ayurveda
- Loose Stools and DysenteryKutaja is traditionally regarded as one of the best herbs for diarrhoea and dysentery, especially chronic forms.
- Intestinal ComfortUsed in traditional formulas for irritable bowel and grahani (a digestive disorder in Ayurveda).

What Kutaja Bark Contains
Kutaja bark contains steroidal alkaloids, the best known of which is conessine, along with kurchine and related alkaloids. These compounds give the bark its bitter taste and have been studied for their activity against certain intestinal microbes. The bark also contains tannins, which add to its astringent character.
