Kantakari Powder
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Kantakari Powder is made from the dried whole plant of Solanum virginianum (also known as Solanum xanthocarpum), a spiny, low-growing herb called the yellow-berried nightshade. In Ayurveda, Kantakari is one of the most important herbs for the respiratory system and is one of the ten roots of the classical Dashmool formula.
Arizone International supplies Kantakari Powder and whole dried herb for Ayurvedic manufacturers, respiratory wellness brands, herbal companies, wholesalers and exporters.
About Kantakari
Kantakari is a prickly, spreading herb with sharp yellow spines on its stems and leaves, purple flowers and small round berries that turn from green with white stripes to bright yellow when ripe. It grows on waste land, roadsides and dry areas throughout India. The name Kantakari comes from the Sanskrit "kantaka", meaning thorn. It is sometimes called kateli or bhatkataiya in Hindi.
The whole plant, including roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits, is used in Ayurvedic preparations. It is collected, dried and ground into a greenish-brown powder with a bitter, pungent taste.
Traditional Uses in Ayurveda
- Respiratory ComfortKantakari is traditionally used for cough, congestion and breathing discomfort. Kantakari Avaleha, a herbal jam, and Vyaghri Haritaki are classical preparations.
- Dashmool IngredientIt is one of the five "lesser roots" (Laghu Panchamool) in Dashmool.
- Digestive SupportIts bitter, pungent nature is used to kindle digestion.
- Fever and Seasonal WellnessIncluded in some traditional decoctions for colds and fever.
What Kantakari Contains
The plant contains steroidal alkaloids and glycoalkaloids, notably solasodine, along with flavonoids, sterols and coumarins. Solasodine has been of industrial interest as a starting material for steroid production. The alkaloid content is one reason Kantakari should be used in traditional doses.
