Passion Flower Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Passion Flower Extract is made from the leaves, stems and flowers of Passiflora incarnata, a fast-growing climbing vine with some of the most unusual flowers in the plant world. It is one of the classic calming herbs of Western herbalism and a common ingredient in relaxation and sleep supplements.
Arizone International manufactures, supplies and exports Passion Flower Extract, standardised to flavonoids, for nutraceutical, herbal and beverage manufacturers.
A Flower With a Story
Passion flower is native to the south-eastern United States and Central America. When Spanish missionaries first saw it in the sixteenth century, they read its parts as symbols of the Passion of Christ: the ten petals for the faithful apostles, the fringe of filaments for the crown of thorns, and the stamens for the wounds. That is how the plant got its name.
Native American communities had used the plant long before, both as a food and as a traditional remedy. It reached European herbal practice in the nineteenth century and is still widely used there today.
Passion Flower vs Passion Fruit
The passion fruit sold in markets comes mostly from Passiflora edulis, a related species. Passion Flower Extract is made from the aerial parts of Passiflora incarnata, which is the species used in herbal medicine. The two should not be confused when writing labels or specifications.
Key Constituents
- FlavonoidsMainly C-glycosides such as vitexin, isovitexin, orientin and isoorientin. Extracts are commonly standardised at around 3.5% to 4% total flavonoids.
- ChrysinA flavone present in small amounts that has drawn research interest.
- MaltolA natural aroma compound.
- Trace AlkaloidsHarmala-type alkaloids occur in very low amounts in the herb.
Applications
Passion flower is used mostly for its traditional calming reputation. European herbal monographs recognise it for mild symptoms of mental stress and to aid sleep. It is frequently found in:
- Sleep and relaxation capsules and tablets
- Stress and mood support blends
- Calming herbal teas, often with chamomile, lemon balm or valerian
- Night-time drinks and gummies
- Liquid herbal tinctures and syrups
- Cosmetic products for a soothing positioning
