Oregano Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Oregano Extract is made from the leaves and flowering tops of Origanum vulgare, the herb most people associate with pizza and Mediterranean cooking. Behind that familiar flavour are two powerful aromatic compounds, carvacrol and thymol, which have made oregano a serious ingredient in supplements, food preservation and animal nutrition.
Arizone International supplies Oregano Extract in powder and liquid forms for nutraceutical, food, feed and personal-care manufacturers. Carvacrol and polyphenol-standardised grades are available on request.
About Oregano
Oregano grows wild on dry, sunny hillsides around the Mediterranean, but it is also found in the Himalayas, where Origanum vulgare grows naturally in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Kashmir. The Greek name means "joy of the mountain". Ancient Greeks crowned newly married couples with oregano and planted it on graves as a symbol of peace.
The strength of oregano varies a lot with climate and variety. Plants grown in hot, dry conditions usually have more carvacrol and a sharper, spicier taste.
Main Constituents
- CarvacrolThe main phenolic compound in most oregano types and the key marker for quality.
- ThymolA related phenol, also found in thyme and ajwain.
- Rosmarinic AcidA water-soluble polyphenol with antioxidant properties.
- FlavonoidsSuch as apigenin and luteolin derivatives.
Extract vs Oil
Oregano oil is steam distilled and contains mainly volatile compounds like carvacrol and thymol. A dry oregano extract can include both volatile and non-volatile compounds, such as rosmarinic acid. Supplement makers choose between the two depending on whether they want a softgel, capsule or powder product. We can advise on the best option for your formula.
Applications
- Capsules and softgels for immune and seasonal wellness
- Digestive and gut-health supplements
- Natural preservatives and antioxidants for meat, sauces and oils
- Seasonings and flavour blends
- Poultry, swine and aquaculture feed additives
- Mouthwashes and oral-care products
- Natural soaps, deodorants and skin cleansers
In animal feed, oregano-based additives have been used widely as part of efforts to reduce antibiotic growth promoters, particularly in Europe. This has become one of the largest commercial uses of oregano extracts.
Specifications and Storage
We supply Oregano Extract as a greenish-brown powder in ratio grades, or standardised to carvacrol or rosmarinic acid as agreed. Liquid and encapsulated forms for feed use are possible on request. Keep the product in airtight, light-proof containers in a cool place to protect its volatile compounds.
Safety Notes
Concentrated oregano can irritate the skin, mouth and stomach. Oral products should be formulated at suitable levels, and people allergic to mint-family plants such as basil, sage or lavender should be cautious. Pregnant women should avoid high-dose oregano supplements.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for carvacrol content on the COA if you want a standardised oregano extract. Oregano oil softgels should use a carrier oil to reduce stomach irritation.
