Garcinia Mangostana Extract is made from the thick purple rind of the mangosteen fruit, often called the "queen of fruits" in South-East Asia. While the white fruit segments are eaten, the rind is rich in natural antioxidant compounds called xanthones, and its extract is used in antioxidant supplements and skin care.
Arizone International supplies Garcinia Mangostana Extract for nutraceutical, herbal, cosmetic and food manufacturers, private label brands, wholesalers and bulk buyers. Standardisation, extract ratio, carrier, packaging and quantity can all be set to your specification.
Garcinia mangostana is a tropical evergreen tree native to South-East Asia, grown mainly in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, with smaller plantings in southern India. It is a close relative of Garcinia cambogia but a very different plant in use.
The fruit rind, or pericarp, contains xanthones such as alpha-mangostin and gamma-mangostin, along with tannins and anthocyanins. Extracts are usually standardised to alpha-mangostin or total xanthones.
To make the extract, the dried plant material is cleaned, milled and extracted with water, hydro-alcohol or another suitable solvent. The liquid extract is filtered, concentrated and usually spray-dried into a fine, free-flowing powder. It can then be standardised to a marker compound or supplied as a ratio extract, such as 10:1, and any carrier used, such as maltodextrin, is stated on the specification.
Formulation, dosage, safety assessment, labelling and permitted claims of the finished product must comply with the regulations of the intended market. Mangosteen extract may add to the effect of blood thinners, so people taking them, and pregnant or breastfeeding women, should consult a healthcare professional.
Do not confuse Garcinia mangostana with Garcinia cambogia; they are different plants with different uses, so check the botanical name on the certificate of analysis.
Ask for alpha-mangostin by HPLC to compare extracts fairly.
Mangosteen extract has a deep reddish-brown colour, which can tint drinks and creams, so check the colour in your formula early. For skin care, ask about grades that disperse well in water or oil. Keep the extract sealed and away from light to protect the xanthones.
