Birch Bark Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Birch Bark Extract is taken from the white outer bark of birch trees. That papery white layer is not just for looks. It is packed with betulin, a triterpene that can make up a large share of the bark's dry weight, along with betulinic acid, lupeol and oleanolic acid.
Arizone International supplies Birch Bark Extract to cosmetic, personal-care and nutraceutical manufacturers. We offer standardised grades in bulk and prepare material as per your required specification.
A Bark With History
In India, the Himalayan birch (Betula utilis) is known as Bhojpatra. Its thin bark sheets were used as writing material for centuries, and many old Sanskrit and Buddhist manuscripts survive on it. In northern Europe and Russia, silver birch (Betula pendula) bark was used for boxes, shoes, roofing and folk remedies. Birch tar, made from the bark, is one of the oldest known adhesives in human history.
What Is in Birch Bark Extract?
- BetulinThe main triterpene and the reason the bark is white. Grades are often standardised at 70% to 98% betulin.
- Betulinic AcidA related compound present in smaller amounts, of great interest in research and cosmetic science.
- Lupeol and Oleanolic AcidOther triterpenes that add to the overall profile of the extract.
- Low Water SolubilityTriterpenes dissolve poorly in water, so the extract is mostly used in oil-based systems, emulsions or powders.
Where Birch Bark Extract Is Used
Most demand for this ingredient comes from the skin-care sector. Birch bark triterpenes have been studied for their role in supporting the skin barrier, and an extract of birch bark has even been approved as a topical medicine in Europe. For cosmetic brands, common uses include:
- Creams, balms and ointments for dry or damaged-looking skin
- Barrier-repair and soothing formulations
- Scalp and hair-care products
- Deodorants and natural personal-care items
- Anti-ageing serums and emulsions
- Oleogels, where betulin helps thicken oil
- Research, supplements and specialty formulations
Interestingly, fine betulin particles can gel vegetable oil without any added emulsifier. Formulators use this property to build simple, clean-label ointments with only two or three ingredients.
Specifications We Can Offer
We supply Birch Bark Extract as an off-white to white powder. Betulin content, particle size, solvent residue limits, heavy metals and microbial limits can be agreed before production. For pharmaceutical or clinical research use, please discuss documentation needs with our team early so we can confirm what is possible.
Store the powder in sealed containers in a cool, dry place. It is stable when kept away from moisture and direct sunlight.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for betulin content on the COA if you need a standardised birch bark extract.
