Barberry Root Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Barberry Root Extract is a concentrated botanical ingredient made from the whole dried root of the barberry plant. It is valued mainly for its alkaloid content, led by berberine, and is widely used by supplement makers, Ayurvedic companies and cosmetic formulators.
Arizone International is an India-based manufacturer, supplier and exporter of Barberry Root Extract. We supply standardised and ratio grades in bulk and can match the extract to your formulation needs.
About the Barberry Plant
Barberries are thorny shrubs from the Berberis family. They grow in Europe, North Africa, Central Asia and across the Himalayan belt of India and Nepal. The plant produces small, sour red berries that are eaten in Iranian cooking as zereshk, but the root is the part most prized in herbal traditions.
In Ayurveda, the root and stem of Indian barberry are called Daruharidra, which roughly means "wood turmeric", because the wood is as yellow as turmeric. Persian, Greek and Chinese medical texts also mention barberry root, usually as a bitter herb for digestion.
What the Root Contains
Whole barberry root gives a broader extract than root bark alone. Alongside berberine, it contains palmatine, berbamine, jatrorrhizine and magnoflorine, plus tannins and other plant compounds. Many formulators prefer this fuller profile for traditional-style products, while others choose a berberine-standardised grade for a clear label value.
- Deep Yellow ColourThe extract is naturally yellow to brownish-yellow because of its berberine content.
- Strong Bitter TasteThis bitterness is typical of the plant and is one reason barberry was used as a digestive bitter.
- Flexible StandardisationWe commonly supply grades at 5% to 10% berberine, or ratio extracts such as 10:1.
- Fine Powder FormEasy to blend, encapsulate or press into tablets.

The right dose and label wording depend on the market. Buyers in the US, EU, Australia and India all work under different rules for botanical ingredients, so we recommend checking permitted claims before launch.
Quality Checks We Follow
Each batch of Barberry Root Extract is tested for berberine assay by HPLC, loss on drying, ash, particle size, heavy metals and microbiology. On request we can also test for residual solvents and pesticides. The extract should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from light, in tightly closed containers.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for berberine content by HPLC on the COA, and label the product with a warning for pregnant women, as berberine is not recommended during pregnancy.
