Barberry Root Bark Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Barberry Root Bark Extract is made from the bark that covers the roots of the barberry shrub. Among all parts of the plant, the root bark carries the highest level of berberine, the bright yellow alkaloid that has made barberry one of the most studied botanicals in the supplement industry today.
Arizone International manufactures and exports Barberry Root Bark Extract from India for nutraceutical brands, contract manufacturers and herbal product companies that need a consistent berberine source.
Why the Root Bark Matters
Barberry belongs to the genus Berberis. European barberry (Berberis vulgaris) and Indian barberry (Berberis aristata) are the two species most often used commercially. In both, the alkaloids concentrate in the root and especially in the thin bark layer around it. Leaves and berries contain far less.
If you cut fresh barberry root, the inner layer is a striking yellow. That colour comes from berberine. Traditional dyers used the same root to colour wool, leather and silk long before anyone isolated the compound in a lab.
Besides berberine, the root bark contains related isoquinoline alkaloids such as berbamine, palmatine, jatrorrhizine and oxyacanthine. A full-spectrum extract keeps these companion compounds, while a highly purified grade focuses on berberine alone.
Grades and Standardisation
- Standardised ExtractCommonly offered at 5%, 8% or 10% berberine by HPLC, with the natural alkaloid profile of the bark.
- Ratio ExtractSold as 4:1, 10:1 or 20:1, where the ratio shows how much dry bark went into one part of extract.
- High-Purity BerberineBerberine hydrochloride at 97% or higher, for buyers who want a single, defined active.
- Custom SpecificationsParticle size, solvent, carrier and microbial limits can be set as per your formulation.
Where It Is Used
Berberine has attracted a great deal of research attention for its role in metabolic health, which is why barberry root bark is now a common ingredient in:
- Capsules and tablets for metabolic wellness
- Combination formulas with chromium, cinnamon or bitter melon
- Digestive and gut-support products
- Traditional Ayurvedic and Unani preparations
- Liposomal and enhanced-absorption berberine products
- Topical and cosmetic formulations for skin care
Berberine is bitter and poorly soluble in water, so most brands use it in capsules or coated tablets rather than drinks. Claims and dosage levels on finished products must follow the regulations of the country where they are sold.
A Note on Safety
Berberine can interact with some prescription medicines and is not generally recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Finished product labels should advise consumers to speak with a healthcare professional before use, especially if they take other medication.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for berberine content by HPLC on the COA.
