Yarrow Extract is made from the flowering tops of Achillea millefolium, a hardy plant with feathery leaves and flat clusters of small white or pink flowers. It grows in meadows and roadsides across the Northern Hemisphere, including the Himalayan region of India, and has been part of herbal traditions for thousands of years.

Arizone International supplies Yarrow Extract to herbal, nutraceutical and cosmetic manufacturers in powder and liquid form, prepared to customer specification.

A Plant Named After a Hero

The botanical name Achillea comes from Achilles, the Greek hero of the Trojan War. According to legend, he used yarrow to treat the wounds of his soldiers. The second part of the name, millefolium, means "a thousand leaves", describing its finely divided foliage. Folk names like soldier's woundwort and nosebleed plant show how closely yarrow was tied to cuts and bleeding in European tradition. Yarrow pollen has even been found at a Neanderthal burial site, though the reason is still debated.

Key Constituents

  • FlavonoidsSuch as apigenin and luteolin glycosides.
  • Sesquiterpene LactonesIncluding achillicin, which contribute to the herb's bitter taste.
  • Volatile OilContains compounds such as camphor, 1,8-cineole and, in some types, chamazulene, which gives yarrow oil a blue colour.
  • Phenolic Acids and TanninsAdd to the extract's astringent character.

Traditional and Modern Uses

In European herbal practice, yarrow is used as a bitter digestive herb, for loss of appetite and minor stomach cramps, and externally for small skin wounds and inflammation. It is also a classic ingredient in traditional cold and fever teas, often mixed with elderflower and peppermint. In skin care, it is used for its soothing and toning properties.

  • Digestive bitters and herbal teas
  • Seasonal wellness tea blends
  • Women's wellness herbal formulas
  • Toners and creams for oily or combination skin
  • Soothing lotions and after-shave products
  • Shampoos and scalp tonics
  • Bitter aperitifs and herbal liqueurs, where regulations allow

Safety Notes

Yarrow belongs to the daisy family, and people allergic to plants such as chamomile, ragweed or chrysanthemum may react to it. It is traditionally avoided during pregnancy. Some people may develop skin sensitivity after contact. Labels should carry the warnings appropriate to the target market.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Yarrow is in the daisy family, so labels should include an allergy warning. Ask for the solvent used on the COA.
