Witch Hazel Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Witch Hazel Extract comes from Hamamelis virginiana, a small shrub native to the woodlands of eastern North America. It is one of the oldest and best known astringent ingredients in skin care, found in toners, after-shave lotions and blemish products in bathrooms around the world.
Arizone International supplies Witch Hazel Extract in dry powder and liquid forms for cosmetic, personal-care and herbal product manufacturers, prepared as per buyer specification.
An Unusual Plant
Witch hazel is known for flowering at a strange time. Its spidery yellow flowers open in autumn and winter, often after the leaves have fallen, when most other plants are bare. The seed pods ripen a year later and can burst open with enough force to throw seeds several metres away.
The "witch" in its name probably has nothing to do with magic. It is believed to come from an old English word, "wych", meaning pliant or bendable. Forked branches of the shrub were used by early settlers for water divining. Native American communities used the bark and leaves in poultices and washes for skin, and settlers soon adopted the practice. By the mid-1800s, witch hazel water was being sold commercially in the United States.
Key Constituents
- TanninsEspecially hamamelitannin and condensed tannins, which give witch hazel its strong astringent, tightening effect.
- Gallic AcidA phenolic acid found in the bark and leaves.
- FlavonoidsSuch as quercetin and kaempferol derivatives.
- Volatile CompoundsPresent mainly in distilled witch hazel water.
Extract vs Distilled Witch Hazel
There are two main types of witch hazel in trade. Distilled witch hazel is made by steam distilling twigs and contains mainly volatile compounds, with very little tannin. It is gentle and common in toners. Witch hazel extract is made by extracting leaves or bark and keeps the tannins, making it much more astringent. We can help you choose the right one for your formula.

Specifications and Storage
We supply witch hazel as a brown dry extract in ratio grades, or standardised to tannins, and as liquid extracts in water, glycerin or other carriers. Every batch is tested for moisture, heavy metals and microbial counts. Store in closed containers in a cool place, away from light, to prevent the tannins from oxidising.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for tannin content on the COA.
