Willow Bark Extract is made from the bark of the white willow, Salix alba, and related willow species. Its main active compound, salicin, has a famous place in medical history: it was the natural starting point that eventually led chemists to aspirin. Today the extract is used in supplements for joint and back comfort and in skin care as a gentle exfoliating ingredient.
Arizone International supplies Willow Bark Extract standardised to salicin, in bulk quantities, for nutraceutical, herbal and cosmetic manufacturers.
From Willow Tree to Aspirin
People have used willow for pain and fever for thousands of years. Ancient Sumerian and Egyptian texts mention it, and the Greek physician Hippocrates wrote about willow bark and leaves. In 1828, scientists isolated salicin from willow bark. Later, salicylic acid was made from it, and in 1897 chemists at Bayer produced acetylsalicylic acid, sold as aspirin. The drug is synthetic, but its story begins with willow bark.
Salicin itself is not the same as aspirin. After it is swallowed, the body slowly converts it into salicylic acid, which is why willow bark acts more gently and more slowly than the drug.
What Willow Bark Contains
- SalicinThe main marker compound. Extracts are commonly standardised at 15%, 25% or higher salicin.
- Other SalicylatesSuch as salicortin and tremulacin, which also convert to salicylic acid.
- Polyphenols and FlavonoidsBelieved to contribute to the extract's overall effect.
- TanninsGive the extract an astringent, bitter taste.
Applications of Willow Bark Extract
European herbal monographs list willow bark for the short-term relief of minor back pain. In supplements, it is often combined with ingredients like boswellia, turmeric, devil's claw or glucosamine.
- Joint comfort and mobility supplements
- Back and muscle comfort formulas
- Herbal teas and traditional preparations
- Exfoliating face washes and toners
- Products for oily and blemish-prone skin
- Anti-dandruff shampoos and scalp treatments
- Natural preservation systems in cosmetics, with other ingredients
In skin care, willow bark is often marketed as a natural alternative to salicylic acid. It exfoliates more gently and is popular in "clean beauty" products.
Safety Notes for Finished Products
Because it contains salicylates, willow bark should not be used by people allergic to aspirin, by children and teenagers (due to the risk associated with salicylates in young people), during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or alongside blood thinners without medical advice. These warnings should appear on supplement labels.
