Vetiver Root Extract
Part of our Herbal Extracts range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Vetiver Root Extract is made from the dense, fibrous roots of Chrysopogon zizanioides, a tall grass known in India as khus. Its earthy, woody and slightly smoky scent is part of Indian summer life, from the green khus sherbet sold on street corners to the wet khus mats hung on doors to cool homes before air conditioners existed.
Arizone International supplies Vetiver Root Extract to cosmetic, fragrance, beverage and Ayurvedic manufacturers. Powder, liquid and aromatic grades are available as per buyer requirement.
The Grass With Deep Roots
Vetiver is not an ordinary grass. Its roots grow straight down, often two to four metres deep, forming an underground curtain. Because of this, vetiver is planted around the world to stop soil erosion on slopes, riverbanks and road embankments. The aromatic part of the plant is the root, which is dug up after about 12 to 18 months, washed and dried.
In India, vetiver grows in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and several other states. North Indian wild-type khus, especially from the Bharatpur region, is known for its fine, deep aroma. Haiti, Indonesia and Réunion are other important producers of vetiver for the perfume industry.
What Gives Vetiver Its Scent
- Sesquiterpene AlcoholsSuch as khusimol and vetiverol, which give the deep, woody base note.
- VetivonesKetones that add an earthy, rooty character.
- Long-Lasting AromaVetiver is a classic base note and fixative in perfumery because it evaporates slowly.
- Cooling ReputationIn Ayurveda, khus (Ushira) is described as cooling and calming.
Applications of Vetiver Root Extract
- Perfumes, attars and fragrance compounds
- Soaps, body washes and deodorants
- Face packs, cooling gels and after-sun products
- Hair oils and scalp-care products
- Khus syrups, sherbets and flavoured drinks
- Ayurvedic cooling formulations and herbal waters
- Room fresheners, incense and aromatherapy products
- Natural insect-repellent products
Ushira is used in several classical Ayurvedic preparations and in traditional drinking water, where a few roots are left to soak in an earthen pot. Brands using vetiver in foods should confirm the permitted forms and levels with local food regulations.
Forms and Specifications
We supply vetiver as a dry root extract powder, as a hydro-alcoholic or glycerin liquid extract, and as a food-grade flavour for khus syrups. For perfumery, vetiver essential oil is also available and is listed separately. Each batch is tested for identity, moisture, heavy metals and microbial counts, and aroma is checked against a reference sample.
Keep the extract in sealed containers in a cool, dark place. Aromatic grades improve slightly with age but should be protected from heat.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for the solvent used on the COA.
Keep packs sealed to protect aroma.
