Basil Leaf Capsules are herbal supplements made from the dried leaves of sweet basil, Ocimum basilicum. Most people know basil from pesto, pasta sauces and Thai curries. As a supplement, its fragrant leaves offer a natural mix of aromatic oils, polyphenols and flavonoids in a simple, easy-to-take form.

Arizone International manufactures and supplies Basil Leaf Capsules for nutraceutical companies, herbal brands, private label sellers and distributors, in powder or extract form.

Sweet Basil vs Tulsi

Sweet basil and tulsi (holy basil) are close relatives from the same genus, but they are different plants. Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) is the sacred basil grown in Indian homes and used widely in Ayurveda. Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) is the culinary basil of Mediterranean and Southeast Asian cooking, known in India as sabja or babui tulsi. Its seeds are the sabja seeds that swell in falooda and summer drinks. We list Tulsi Capsules separately.

What Basil Leaves Contain

  • Essential OilRich in linalool, eugenol, methyl chavicol (estragole) and other aroma compounds. The exact mix varies a lot between basil varieties.
  • Rosmarinic AcidA key polyphenol with antioxidant properties.
  • FlavonoidsSuch as orientin and vicenin.
  • Vitamins and MineralsIncluding vitamin K, vitamin A precursors and small amounts of calcium and iron.

Traditional and Modern Uses

In traditional European and Asian herbal practice, basil was used for digestion, gas and mild stomach cramps, and as a calming herb. The name itself comes from the Greek "basilikon", meaning royal, and the herb was once used in royal perfumes and ointments. Today, Basil Leaf Capsules are used in:

  • Digestive comfort and after-meal formulas
  • Antioxidant and general wellness supplements
  • Culinary-herb blends with oregano, rosemary and thyme
  • Stress and calm formulas
  • Private label herbal ranges

Formulation Options

We can supply capsules filled with finely milled basil leaf powder, which keeps the natural profile of the herb, or with a concentrated extract standardised to rosmarinic acid or total polyphenols. Typical fills are 400 mg to 500 mg per capsule. Vegetarian HPMC shells suit this plant-based product well.

Handling the Aroma

Basil's aromatic oils are volatile and can fade if the leaves are dried at high heat or stored badly. We work with leaves that are dried at controlled temperatures and packed promptly. Finished capsules should be stored in tightly closed containers away from heat and light.

Safety Notes

Basil contains vitamin K, so people on warfarin should check with their doctor before taking concentrated basil supplements. High doses are not recommended during pregnancy due to the estragole content of some varieties.

Quality Considerations

  • Ocimum basilicum identity, clearly separate from tulsi
  • Colour, aroma and volatile oil content
  • Moisture, microbial load and heavy metals
  • Pesticide residues
  • Fill weight uniformity and Certificate of Analysis
