Senna Pods are the dried seed pods of Cassia angustifolia, known in the trade as Tinnevelly senna. India is the world's leading producer of senna, and the pods are exported in large volumes for herbal teas, laxative preparations and sennoside extraction.
Arizone International supplies Senna Pods to herbal, Ayurvedic, food and nutraceutical manufacturers, traders, private label brands and bulk buyers. Grade, cut size, cleaning level, packaging and quantity can all be set to your specification.
Cassia angustifolia (also classified as Senna alexandrina) is a small shrub grown mainly in the Tirunelveli region of Tamil Nadu and in parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Its flat, pale green to brown pods are picked by hand when mature and dried.
Senna pods and leaves contain sennosides, natural anthraquinone glycosides that act as stimulant laxatives. Pods usually contain more sennosides than leaves and have a milder taste, which makes them popular for herbal teas. Quality is judged by sennoside content, colour and the amount of broken pods and foreign matter.
After harvest, the material is dried in the sun or shade, then cleaned to remove stones, dust, stems and other foreign matter, and sorted by size and quality. It can be supplied whole, cut into smaller pieces for tea and extraction, or milled into coarse or fine powder. For food and ready-to-use products, steam sterilisation can be arranged to bring microbial counts within export limits.
Formulation, dosage, safety assessment, labelling and permitted claims of the finished product must comply with the regulations of the intended market. Senna is a stimulant laxative for short-term use only; it is not recommended for children, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people with bowel conditions, and long-term use can upset the body's salt balance.
Ask for sennoside content by HPLC, as it decides the strength of teas and extracts made from the pods.
Senna products need clear directions for short-term use, and many markets regulate them as medicines, so check the local rules before launch.
For tea brands, whole pods are often used in loose herbal teas, while cut pods suit tea bags. Store the pods dry and away from light to protect their colour and sennoside content.
