Senna Leaves are the dried leaflets of Cassia angustifolia, the Tinnevelly senna plant. Along with the pods, senna leaves are one of India's major herbal exports, used around the world in herbal teas, laxative products and as a raw material for sennoside extracts.
Arizone International supplies Senna Leaves to herbal, Ayurvedic, food and nutraceutical manufacturers, traders, private label brands and bulk buyers. Grade, cut size, cleaning level, packaging and quantity can all be set to your specification.
The senna shrub is grown mainly in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan. Its small, pale green, lance-shaped leaflets are harvested several times a season and dried in the shade to keep their colour.
Senna leaves contain sennosides A and B, natural anthraquinone glycosides with a stimulant laxative effect. The leaves are usually graded by sennoside content, colour and the amount of stalks and foreign matter. Cut leaves (tea-bag cut) are popular for herbal teas, while whole leaves and powder suit extraction and churnas.
After harvest, the material is dried in the sun or shade, then cleaned to remove stones, dust, stems and other foreign matter, and sorted by size and quality. It can be supplied whole, cut into smaller pieces for tea and extraction, or milled into coarse or fine powder. For food and ready-to-use products, steam sterilisation can be arranged to bring microbial counts within export limits.
Formulation, dosage, safety assessment, labelling and permitted claims of the finished product must comply with the regulations of the intended market. Senna is a stimulant laxative for short-term use only; it is not recommended for children, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for people with bowel conditions.
Ask for sennoside content by HPLC, and specify the cut size you need for tea bags or extraction.
Shade-dried leaves keep a better green colour, which buyers of herbal teas often prefer.
Senna leaves are packed in pressed bales or lined bags for export, and each lot should carry a phytosanitary certificate. For herbal tea brands, a blend with peppermint, fennel or ginger improves the taste. Store the leaves dry and away from light to keep their green colour.
