Psyllium Seeds are the whole seeds of Plantago ovata, known in India as Isabgol. India, mainly Gujarat and Rajasthan, grows most of the world's psyllium, and the seeds are the raw material for psyllium husk, one of the best-known natural fibre products.

Arizone International supplies Psyllium Seeds to herbal, Ayurvedic, food and nutraceutical manufacturers, traders, private label brands and bulk buyers. Grade, cut size, cleaning level, packaging and quantity can all be set to your specification.

What Is

Plantago ovata is a short annual herb grown in the dry, cool winter season. Each small, boat-shaped seed is covered by a thin, translucent coat called the husk. When the husk comes into contact with water, it swells and forms a clear gel.

The whole seeds are cleaned and graded, then milled to separate the husk from the inner seed. The husk is used in fibre supplements and foods, while the remaining seed, sometimes called khakha, is used in animal feed. Whole seeds are also used in some traditional foods and drinks.

After harvest, the material is dried in the sun or shade, then cleaned to remove stones, dust, stems and other foreign matter, and sorted by size and quality. It can be supplied whole, cut into smaller pieces for tea and extraction, or milled into coarse or fine powder. For food and ready-to-use products, steam sterilisation can be arranged to bring microbial counts within export limits.

Formulation, dosage, safety assessment, labelling and permitted claims of the finished product must comply with the regulations of the intended market. Psyllium must be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage, it can reduce the absorption of some medicines if taken at the same time, and some people are allergic to psyllium dust.

Quality Parameters

  • Purity and foreign seed content
  • Swelling volume
  • Moisture and microbiology
  • Moisture, total ash, acid-insoluble ash and foreign matter
  • Heavy metals, microbiology and pesticide residues where applicable
  • Batch consistency and Certificate of Analysis with every lot

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Ask for the swelling volume, as it shows how well the seed will perform when milled into husk.

Psyllium dust can cause allergies in workers, so handle it in well-ventilated areas.

Psyllium seed is traded mainly on purity, swelling volume and moisture, and these three figures decide the yield and quality of husk. Store the seeds in a cool, dry place in clean, lined bags, and keep them away from strong smells, as psyllium can absorb odours.
