Cluster Bean, known in India as guar or gawar, is Cyamopsis tetragonoloba, a hardy legume that grows in dry, sandy soils. Its tender green pods are a popular vegetable, and its seeds are the source of guar gum, one of the most important natural thickeners used by the food, pharmaceutical, textile and oil industries worldwide.
Arizone International supplies Cluster Bean seeds, dehydrated cluster beans and guar-based products in bulk for food processors, gum manufacturers, wholesalers and exporters.
A Desert Crop With Global Reach
Guar is so well suited to heat and low rainfall that India grows the vast majority of the world's guar, most of it in western Rajasthan, with further production in Haryana and Gujarat. The plant grows as an upright bush with clusters of flat, slender pods along the stem, which gives it the name "cluster bean". It is a legume, so it also enriches the soil with nitrogen.
In the early 2010s, guar farmers in Rajasthan saw prices rise sharply because demand for guar gum from the oil and gas industry, where it is used in hydraulic fracturing fluids, increased suddenly. The episode showed how a humble village crop had become a global commodity.
From Seed to Guar Gum
A guar seed has three main parts: the outer husk, the endosperm and the germ. The endosperm is rich in galactomannan, the natural polysaccharide that forms guar gum. Processors dehusk the seed and separate the endosperm, known as guar split, from the husk and germ. The splits are then ground into guar gum powder, while the husk and germ become guar meal, a protein-rich cattle feed.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators
For guar gum production, the key specification is the gum content of the seed or split. For food use as a vegetable, fresh tender cluster beans are harvested young, before the seeds harden.
