Spirulina Powder is a deep blue-green powder made from dried Arthrospira platensis, a microscopic, spiral-shaped cyanobacterium often called blue-green algae. It is one of the most nutrient-dense foods known, with a very high protein content, and it is used in superfood blends, smoothies, tablets, snacks and as a source of natural blue colour.
Arizone International supplies Spirulina Powder and tablets for supplement manufacturers, superfood and beverage brands, food companies, animal feed producers, wholesalers and exporters.
An Ancient Food
Spirulina grows naturally in warm, alkaline lakes. The Aztecs harvested it from Lake Texcoco in Mexico and made it into cakes called tecuitlatl, and people around Lake Chad in Africa still collect it and dry it into cakes called dihé. Today it is cultivated in open ponds or closed systems in many countries, including India, where farms in Tamil Nadu and other southern states produce spirulina. It grows quickly, uses relatively little land, and has been studied as a sustainable food.
What Spirulina Contains
- ProteinTypically around 55% to 70% of dry weight, with all essential amino acids.
- PhycocyaninA blue pigment-protein complex that gives spirulina its colour; spirulina extract is used as a natural blue food colour.
- Vitamins and MineralsIncluding iron, B vitamins, vitamin K and beta-carotene.
- Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA)An omega-6 fatty acid.
- ChlorophyllGiving the green tone.
Spirulina contains a form of vitamin B12 that is largely inactive in humans, so it should not be relied on as a vitamin B12 source.
Applications
- Superfood powders, green drinks and smoothies
- Tablets and capsules
- Protein bars, snacks and pasta
- Natural blue-green colour for foods and confectionery
- Face masks and cosmetics
- Aquaculture, poultry and ornamental fish feed
Safety and Quality Testing
Because spirulina grows in water, quality depends heavily on the growing conditions. Contamination with other algae that produce toxins (microcystins) or with heavy metals is a known risk in poorly controlled production. Reputable spirulina is grown in controlled ponds and tested for microcystins, heavy metals and microbiology. People with phenylketonuria (PKU) or autoimmune conditions, and pregnant women, should consult a doctor before use.
Quality Parameters
- Protein and phycocyanin content
- Colour, taste and odour
- Moisture and particle size
- Microcystin testing
- Heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury)
- Microbiology, including pathogens
Packaging and Storage
Spirulina Powder is packed in airtight, light-protective food-grade bags. Store in a cool, dry, dark place; its colour and nutrients degrade with light and heat.
Spirulina is also used in blue lattes and colourful desserts.
Spirulina tablets are also available for private label brands looking for a ready-to-sell format.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for heavy metal and microcystin test results for every batch, as spirulina can pick up contaminants from water. Keep it sealed and cool.
