Saw palmetto grows wild in sandy coastal areas of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas, where it forms dense thickets. Its name comes from the sharp, saw-like teeth on its leaf stems. The olive-sized berries ripen from green to blue-black in late summer and autumn and are harvested by hand from wild plants. Native American peoples ate the berries as food. In the early 20th century, the berries were listed in the US Pharmacopeia, and today saw palmetto is one of the best-selling herbal supplements in the world.
