Pippali Long Pepper Powder
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Pippali (Long Pepper) Powder is made from the dried, catkin-like fruit spikes of Piper longum. Long pepper is a close relative of black pepper, with a hotter, sweeter and more complex flavour, and it is one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda, where it is valued for digestion, respiratory health and as a Rasayana.
Arizone International supplies Pippali Powder and whole long pepper for Ayurvedic manufacturers, spice companies, herbal brands, wholesalers and exporters.
The Pepper Before Black Pepper
Long pepper was known in Europe long before black pepper became common. The ancient Greeks and Romans prized it, and the Roman writer Pliny noted that it was more expensive than black pepper. Over time, black pepper and later chilli peppers replaced it in most Western kitchens, but long pepper remained central to Indian medicine and is still used in some Indian, Indonesian and North African cooking. It grows as a climbing vine in the warm, humid forests of India, especially in the north-eastern states, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
The small fruits grow tightly packed on a spike and are harvested while still unripe, then sun-dried until they turn dark grey-brown.
