Maca Root Powder is made from the dried root of Lepidium meyenii, a hardy plant of the radish and mustard family that grows high in the Andes mountains of Peru, at altitudes of around 4,000 metres. It has a malty, nutty and slightly butterscotch-like taste and is one of the best-known superfood powders in the world.

Arizone International supplies Maca Root Powder in raw and gelatinised forms for supplement brands, food and beverage manufacturers, sports nutrition companies and private label businesses.

About Maca

Maca has been grown in the Junín and Pasco regions of the Peruvian Andes for more than 2,000 years. It survives freezing nights, strong sun and poor soil where few other crops can grow. Andean communities traditionally ate the root cooked, roasted or in porridges and drinks, and dried roots were used as a store of food through the year. After harvest, the roots are dried in the open air for several weeks before being milled.

Colours of Maca

  • Yellow MacaThe most common type, making up most of the harvest, with a mild, sweet taste.
  • Red MacaLess common, slightly sweeter, and popular in women's wellness products.
  • Black MacaThe rarest type, with a stronger, slightly bitter taste, often used in men's and sports products.

Raw vs Gelatinised Maca

Raw maca powder is simply dried and milled root. Gelatinised maca is cooked and pressed to remove much of the starch before drying. This makes it easier to digest, gives it a smoother, more toasty flavour and makes it more concentrated. Gelatinised maca is often preferred for capsules and for people with sensitive digestion, while raw maca is popular in smoothies and raw-food recipes.
