Indigo Powder is the finely ground dried leaf of Indigofera tinctoria, the true indigo plant. It is best known as a natural, plant-based hair colour: used after or with henna, it turns hair from red to brown or deep black without synthetic dyes such as PPD (para-phenylenediamine).
Arizone International supplies pure Indigo Powder for natural hair colour brands, henna product makers, salons, Ayurvedic companies, wholesalers and exporters.
How Indigo Colours Hair
Fresh indigo leaves contain a colourless compound called indican. When the powder is mixed with water, indican breaks down and, on exposure to air, forms indigotin, a blue pigment. Applied to hair, indigo gives a blue-black tone. On its own, it tends to look blue on light or grey hair, which is why it is almost always used together with henna, whose red-orange colour combines with the blue to create browns and blacks.
Two Common Methods
- Two-Step MethodHenna is applied first and rinsed, then indigo is applied on top. This gives the deepest, most even black, especially on grey hair.
- One-Step MethodHenna and indigo are mixed together in different ratios. More henna gives lighter brown and auburn shades; more indigo gives darker brown to black.
Indigo paste should be used soon after mixing, usually within 15 to 30 minutes, because the dye starts to develop and lose strength quickly. The final colour continues to deepen for a day or two after application as it oxidises.
Applications
- Natural black and brown hair colour powders
- Henna-indigo blends and ready-mix kits
- Beard and moustache colour
- Ayurvedic hair oils and hair packs
- Natural dyeing of fabric and crafts
- Private label natural hair colour ranges
What Makes Good Indigo
The quality of indigo depends mainly on dye content and freshness. Leaves harvested at the right time and dried quickly give the strongest colour. Indigo powder slowly loses strength over time, especially in heat and humidity, so it should ideally be used within about a year of production. Good indigo is a fine, dark green to greenish-blue powder with a fresh, grassy smell. It should be free of added chemical dyes, metallic salts and fillers.
Quality Parameters
- Colour strength (tested by dyeing samples)
- Fineness (commonly 150 to 200 mesh or finer)
- Moisture, sand and ash content
- Freedom from PPD and synthetic dyes
- Heavy metals and microbiology
Safety Notes
Pure indigo is a plant powder, but some people may still react to it. A skin allergy test at least 48 hours before use is always recommended. Indigo is for external use only.
Packaging and Storage
Packed in moisture-proof bags, often with an inner liner, and stored in a cool, dry, dark place to preserve dye strength.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Indigo is used with henna for dark hair colour; ask for dye content and a patch-test note.
