Gotu Kola Powder
Part of our Herbs range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Gotu Kola Powder is made from the dried leaves and aerial parts of Centella asiatica, a small creeping herb with round, fan-shaped leaves. It is valued in Ayurveda as Mandukaparni, eaten as a leafy green in Sri Lanka and South India, and, as "cica", has become one of the most popular ingredients in modern skincare.
Arizone International supplies Gotu Kola Powder for Ayurvedic and supplement manufacturers, herbal tea brands, cosmetic and skincare companies, wholesalers and exporters.
A Herb of Many Cultures
Centella asiatica grows in damp, shady places, along streams, rice fields and garden lawns across India, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia and Africa. In Sri Lanka, fresh gotu kola leaves are finely chopped and mixed with coconut to make gotu kola sambol, a popular side dish. In Tamil Nadu, the leaves are known as vallarai keerai and cooked or made into chutney. In Ayurveda, Mandukaparni is classed as a Medhya Rasayana, a herb traditionally used to support memory and a calm mind.
In some regions the herb is also called Brahmi, which can cause confusion with Bacopa monnieri, the Brahmi most used in Ayurvedic products. The botanical name should always be specified.
Cica in Skincare
Centella asiatica is known in skincare as "cica", short for cicatrisation, meaning wound healing. According to a popular story, tigers were seen rolling in the plant to soothe their wounds, which gave rise to the name "tiger grass". Cica creams, serums and balms, especially in Korean beauty products, are used for sensitive, irritated or stressed-looking skin.
