Ginkgo Biloba Powder is made from the dried, fan-shaped leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree, one of the oldest living tree species on Earth. Ginkgo leaves are best known as the source of standardised ginkgo extract, one of the most researched herbal products for memory and circulation, and the leaf powder is used in teas and as a raw material for extraction.
Arizone International supplies Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Powder and standardised ginkgo extract for herbal tea brands, extract manufacturers, supplement companies, wholesalers and exporters.
A Living Fossil
The ginkgo tree has existed with little change for over 200 million years, and fossils show that its leaves looked almost the same in the age of the dinosaurs. It is the only surviving member of its plant group, which is why it is often called a "living fossil". Ginkgo is native to China and has been planted for centuries around Buddhist temples in China, Korea and Japan. Six ginkgo trees near the centre of Hiroshima survived the atomic bomb of 1945 and are still alive today.
In autumn, ginkgo leaves turn bright golden-yellow. Leaves for herbal use are usually harvested green, in summer, when their active compounds are at useful levels, then dried and milled.
Leaf Powder vs Standardised Extract
This is an important distinction for buyers. Raw ginkgo leaf naturally contains ginkgolic acids, which can cause allergic skin reactions and are removed almost completely during the manufacture of standardised extract. For this reason, most supplements use a standardised extract (usually 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones, with ginkgolic acids below 5 ppm) rather than raw leaf powder. Leaf powder is mainly used in teas and as a raw material for extraction, where local regulations allow.
What Ginkgo Leaves Contain
- Flavonol GlycosidesBased on quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin.
- Terpene LactonesGinkgolides and bilobalide, unique to ginkgo.
- Ginkgolic AcidsPresent in raw leaves and reduced in quality extracts.
- Proanthocyanidins and Organic AcidsIn smaller amounts.
Applications
- Raw material for standardised ginkgo extract
- Herbal tea blends, where permitted
- Cosmetic products for skin and scalp
- Standardised extract for memory, focus and circulation supplements
Safety Notes
Ginkgo may increase the risk of bleeding and can interact with blood thinners, aspirin, some antidepressants and seizure medicines. People planning surgery should stop ginkgo in advance on medical advice. Ginkgo seeds, sold as a food in some Asian countries, are a different product and can be toxic if eaten raw or in large amounts.
