Boswellia Serrata Powder is made from the dried gum resin of Boswellia serrata, the Indian frankincense tree, known in India as Salai Guggul or Shallaki. The resin is collected, cleaned and ground into a pale yellow to light brown powder with a resinous, slightly balsamic smell. It is widely used in joint wellness supplements, Ayurvedic formulations and incense.
Arizone International supplies Boswellia Serrata Powder and standardised Boswellia extract to supplement brands, Ayurvedic manufacturers and exporters.
About Indian Frankincense
Boswellia serrata is a medium-sized tree that grows in the dry, hilly forests of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh. When the bark is cut, the tree releases an oleo-gum-resin that hardens into tears and lumps. Tapping is done mainly in the dry season, and collection supports many forest communities. The resin is a close relative of the frankincense of Arabia and Africa.
Powder vs Standardised Extract
- Boswellia Serrata PowderGround natural resin, containing the gum, resin and a small amount of essential oil. Used in Ayurvedic formulations, blends and incense.
- Boswellia Serrata ExtractStandardised to boswellic acids, commonly 65% or more, and sometimes to AKBA. This is the form used in most modern joint supplements and clinical studies. We supply both.
Key Compounds
- Boswellic AcidsPentacyclic triterpenes, including beta-boswellic acid and AKBA (3-O-acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid), used as quality markers.
- Gum PolysaccharidesMake up a large part of the natural resin.
- Essential OilPresent in small amounts, giving the resin its aroma.
Applications
- Joint comfort and mobility supplements
- Ayurvedic formulations and Shallaki preparations
- Capsules, tablets and blends with turmeric or ginger
- Boswellia extract production
- Incense, dhoop and resin blends
- Skin care creams and balms
Traditional Use and Research
In Ayurveda, Shallaki is traditionally used for joint health. Clinical studies, mostly using standardised extracts, have looked at Boswellia serrata for joint comfort and mobility. These are traditional uses and research findings, not approved health claims.
Safety
Boswellia is generally well tolerated, though it may cause mild stomach upset. It is not recommended during pregnancy, and people taking medicines should seek medical advice.
Quality Parameters
- Botanical identity (Boswellia serrata oleo-gum-resin)
- Boswellic acid content by HPLC, where specified
- Mesh size and moisture content
- Microbiological limits, heavy metals and pesticide residues
Packaging and Storage
Boswellia Serrata Powder is supplied in 20 to 25 kg bags or fibre drums with a food-grade liner. Store it in a cool, dry place away from heat, as the resin can soften and clump when warm.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Boswellia resin powder is sticky and hard to mill, so ask for a fine, free-flowing grade if you plan to fill capsules. Ask for boswellic acid content on the COA.
Store it cool, as warm conditions make the resin sticky.
