What Is Bhringraj?
Eclipta prostrata (also known as Eclipta alba) is a small, creeping herb with white, daisy-like flowers that grows in damp places, field edges and along ditches across India. It is often called false daisy. In Sanskrit, Bhringraj is translated as "king of hair", and in Ayurveda it is considered one of the most important herbs for the scalp and hair. It is also traditionally used as a liver herb, which is why it appears in several classical liver formulas.
When the fresh leaves are crushed, they turn black, and in South India the herb is known as karisalankanni. This natural darkening is one reason the herb has long been linked with keeping hair dark. The whole plant is usually dried and ground into powder.
