Turkey tail is one of the most common mushrooms on Earth, found in woodlands across Asia, Europe and the Americas. In traditional Chinese medicine it is called Yun Zhi, meaning "cloud mushroom". What makes it unusual is how much formal research it has received. In Japan, a protein-bound polysaccharide extract from turkey tail called PSK (Krestin) was developed in the 1970s and has been used alongside conventional care. In China, a related extract called PSP was developed later.

Turkey tail is tough and leathery, not a culinary mushroom, so a hot-water extract is usually preferred to make its polysaccharides more available. Typical fills are 400 mg to 500 mg per capsule in vegetarian HPMC shells.
