Stevia Capsules are herbal supplements made from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana, a small shrub whose leaves taste many times sweeter than sugar. Stevia is best known as a zero-calorie sweetener, but the whole leaf also contains polyphenols and other plant compounds, and it is used in some traditional wellness products for healthy blood sugar.

The Sweet Leaf of Paraguay
Stevia comes from the highlands on the border of Paraguay and Brazil. The Guarani people called it "ka'a he'ẽ", meaning "sweet herb", and used it to sweeten mate tea and medicines for centuries. A Swiss botanist, Moisés Bertoni, described the plant scientifically in the late 1800s. Japan began using stevia extracts commercially in the 1970s, and since then stevia has become a global sugar alternative.
Stevia is now grown in China, South America and in India, including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Punjab.
Leaf Capsules vs Sweetener
Refined stevia sweeteners are purified steviol glycosides such as rebaudioside A. Stevia leaf capsules are different. They contain the whole dried leaf or a leaf extract, which includes the sweet glycosides along with chlorophyll, polyphenols and other compounds. Leaf capsules are used as a herbal supplement, not as a tabletop sweetener.

Formulation Options

Purified steviol glycosides are approved as sweeteners in many countries, including India, the EU and the US. Whole-leaf stevia is regulated differently in some markets, so regulatory status should be checked for each destination. People on diabetes or blood pressure medicines should monitor their levels and consult a doctor. People allergic to plants in the daisy family may react to stevia.
