Researchers noticed that women in these countries traditionally reported fewer hot flushes during menopause than women in Western countries, and diets rich in soy were one suggested reason. This observation led to decades of research on soy isoflavones.

India is a major soybean producer, with Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan leading cultivation. Most soybean is used for oil and protein, and isoflavones are extracted from the germ or whole bean.
