Senna Capsules are herbal laxative supplements made from the leaves or pods of Senna alexandrina (also called Cassia angustifolia). Senna is one of the most widely used natural laxatives in the world, recognised in pharmacopoeias and herbal monographs for short-term relief of occasional constipation.

India's Senna Belt

Tinnevelly senna, named after the old name of the Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, has been famous in world trade for well over a century. India is today the largest producer and exporter of senna leaves and pods, with cultivation concentrated in Tamil Nadu and the dry regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat. Senna thrives in hot, arid conditions with little rain. In Ayurveda it is known as Swarnapatri, meaning "golden leaf", and in Unani as Sana Makki, after the senna from the Mecca region.

How Senna Works

Senna leaves and pods contain sennosides, a group of anthraquinone glycosides. They pass through the stomach and small intestine unchanged. In the large intestine, gut bacteria convert them into active compounds that stimulate the bowel muscles and increase water in the stool. This is why senna usually works in about 6 to 12 hours, and is often taken at bedtime.

Formulation Options

For reliable dosing, senna products are usually labelled by sennoside content. We can fill capsules with senna leaf powder, pod powder or extract standardised to sennosides (commonly 8% to 20% or higher). A typical adult dose is 15 mg to 30 mg of sennosides at night, but products must follow the rules in each market. Gelatin and HPMC capsules, bottles and blisters are available.

Important Safety Notes

Senna is for short-term use, generally no more than one to two weeks without medical advice. Long-term use can lead to dependence, electrolyte imbalance and bowel problems. It should not be used by children under 12 without medical advice, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or by people with intestinal blockage, inflammatory bowel disease, appendicitis or unexplained abdominal pain.
