Rhodiola rosea is a hardy succulent from the stonecrop family that grows in cold, rocky places: the Arctic, the mountains of Scandinavia and Siberia, the Alps and the Himalayas. Vikings are said to have used it for strength and endurance, and in Siberia, a bouquet of rhodiola roots was traditionally given to couples at weddings. Soviet scientists studied rhodiola in depth during the Cold War as a possible aid for soldiers, cosmonauts and athletes, and it was one of the herbs that shaped the modern concept of an "adaptogen".

In India, Rhodiola species grow in Ladakh and the high Himalayas, where they have attracted research interest for high-altitude use.

Safety Notes

Quality Considerations

Rhodiola is often adulterated with cheaper Rhodiola species that contain salidroside but little or no rosavins, or with synthetic salidroside. We test rosavins and salidroside by HPLC and check the ratio to confirm Rhodiola rosea. Heavy metals, residual solvents and microbiology are also tested for each batch.
