What Are Reishi Mushroom Extract Capsules?
Reishi is a medicinal mushroom used in East Asian herbal traditions for well over two thousand years. In China it is called Lingzhi and was once known as the "mushroom of immortality". It grows as a glossy, reddish-brown, kidney-shaped shelf on hardwood trees, and it is woody and bitter, so it has never been eaten as a food. Traditionally it was sliced and simmered for hours as a tea.
Today reishi is mostly cultivated on logs or wood-based substrates. Extracts concentrate selected compounds. Hot-water extraction recovers polysaccharides and beta-glucans, while alcohol extraction recovers triterpenes such as ganoderic acids, which are responsible for the bitter taste.
