Licorice Capsules are herbal supplements made from the sweet root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, known in Ayurveda as Yashtimadhu and in India as mulethi. The root is naturally many times sweeter than sugar and has been used in Ayurvedic, Chinese, Greek and Middle Eastern medicine for thousands of years, especially for the throat and stomach.
Arizone International manufactures and supplies Licorice Capsules with root powder, standardised extract or DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice), for digestive, respiratory and Ayurvedic brands and private label businesses.
A Root Found in Tutankhamun's Tomb
Licorice root was found among the treasures in Tutankhamun's tomb, and it was carried by Roman soldiers and Alexander the Great's army to ease thirst on long marches. In Indian homes, a small stick of mulethi is chewed or boiled in tea for a sore throat or hoarse voice. In traditional Chinese medicine, licorice is one of the most frequently used herbs, often added to formulas to harmonise the other ingredients.
What Licorice Contains
- GlycyrrhizinA triterpene saponin about 50 times sweeter than sugar, and the main marker of licorice root.
- FlavonoidsIncluding liquiritin, isoliquiritin and glabridin, which give the root its yellow colour.
- Polysaccharides and CoumarinsPresent in smaller amounts.
Standard Licorice vs DGL
Glycyrrhizin is responsible for licorice's sweetness, but in large amounts over time it can raise blood pressure and lower potassium. DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) has most of the glycyrrhizin removed and is widely used in stomach and digestive products because it is considered better suited for longer use. We can supply either, depending on your product.
Applications
- Throat and respiratory comfort supplements
- Digestive and stomach lining support products (often DGL)
- Adrenal and stress-support blends
- Ayurvedic Rasayana and Yashtimadhu formulas
- Skin wellness supplements with glabridin-rich extracts
- Private label herbal ranges
Formulation Options
We can fill capsules with licorice root powder, extracts standardised to glycyrrhizin (commonly 10% to 20%), or DGL extract with glycyrrhizin below 3%. Typical fills are 300 mg to 500 mg per capsule in gelatin or vegetarian shells.
Safety Notes
Regular licorice containing glycyrrhizin should not be used by people with high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease or low potassium, or during pregnancy. It can interact with diuretics, corticosteroids, digoxin and blood pressure medicines. Many regulators recommend limiting daily glycyrrhizin intake, and labels should follow local guidance. DGL is generally preferred for longer-term use.
Quality Considerations
- Glycyrrhiza glabra root identity
- Glycyrrhizin content by HPLC, or confirmation of low levels in DGL
- Moisture, ash and foreign matter
- Heavy metals, pesticides and microbiology
- Batch consistency and Certificate of Analysis
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Choose DGL licorice for products meant for long-term use, as regular intake of glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure. Standard licorice extract should carry a warning for people with high blood pressure.
