Lemon Balm Capsules
Part of our Capsules range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Lemon Balm Capsules are herbal supplements made from the leaves of Melissa officinalis, a gentle, lemon-scented herb from the mint family. For centuries, lemon balm has been used in Europe to lift the mood, calm the nerves and settle the stomach.
Arizone International manufactures and supplies Lemon Balm Capsules with leaf powder or standardised extract, for relaxation, sleep and digestive wellness brands and private label businesses.
The Herb of Gladness
Lemon balm is native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean, and it grows easily in gardens, where bees love it. The name Melissa comes from the Greek word for honeybee. Medieval monks grew it in their gardens, and in the seventeenth century the Carmelite nuns of Paris made a famous tonic called "Carmelite water" with lemon balm as its main ingredient. The Persian physician Avicenna wrote that lemon balm "makes the heart merry".
What Lemon Balm Contains
- Rosmarinic AcidThe main polyphenol in lemon balm and the most common standardisation marker.
- Essential OilRich in citral (geranial and neral) and citronellal, which give the lemony scent.
- TriterpenesSuch as ursolic and oleanolic acid.
- FlavonoidsIncluding luteolin glycosides.
Applications
Small human studies have looked at lemon balm for calmness, mood and sleep quality, and European herbal monographs recognise it for mild symptoms of mental stress, to aid sleep and for mild digestive complaints. Lemon Balm Capsules are used in:
- Stress and calm-mood supplements
- Sleep support blends with valerian, chamomile or hops
- Focus and daytime calm formulas with L-theanine
- Digestive comfort products for bloating and nervous stomach
- Private label relaxation ranges
Formulation Options
We can fill capsules with dried lemon balm leaf powder or with an extract standardised to rosmarinic acid, commonly 5% or higher. Typical fills are 300 mg to 500 mg per capsule. Vegetarian HPMC capsules and bottle or blister packaging are available.
Safety Notes
Lemon balm may cause mild drowsiness and may add to the effect of sedatives and alcohol. It may affect thyroid function, so people with thyroid conditions or on thyroid medication should consult a doctor. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should seek advice before use.
Quality Considerations
- Melissa officinalis leaf identity, separate from lemongrass or lemon verbena
- Rosmarinic acid content by HPLC
- Freshness and aroma, since the essential oil is volatile
- Moisture, heavy metals, pesticides and microbiology
- Batch consistency and Certificate of Analysis
Fresh lemon balm leaves lose their scent quickly after harvest, so the herb is dried promptly at low temperature to keep its essential oil.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Lemon balm extract standardised to rosmarinic acid gives a more consistent dose for relaxation products. It is a gentle daytime option and pairs well with L-theanine, chamomile or passion flower in calm formulas.
