Jatamansi Capsules are Ayurvedic herbal supplements made from the aromatic roots and rhizomes of Nardostachys jatamansi, a small plant that grows high in the Himalayas. Known as spikenard in English, Jatamansi has been prized for thousands of years, both as a precious perfume and as a calming herb for the mind.
Arizone International manufactures and supplies Jatamansi Capsules with root powder or extract, for Ayurvedic brands, sleep and stress product companies and private label businesses.
A Herb of Ancient Trade
Jatamansi grows between about 3,000 and 5,000 metres in the alpine meadows of Nepal, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Bhutan. The name comes from "jata", meaning matted hair, because the rhizome is covered in thick, reddish-brown fibres that look like tangled locks.
Spikenard oil was a luxury good in the ancient world, traded from the Himalayas to Egypt, Rome and the Middle East. It is mentioned in the Bible, where it is described as a very costly ointment. In Ayurveda, Jatamansi is valued as a Medhya herb that supports a calm, clear mind and restful sleep, and is used in classical formulas for the nervous system.
What Jatamansi Contains
- SesquiterpenesSuch as jatamansone (valeranone), nardol and related compounds, also found in valerian.
- Essential OilGives the root its earthy, musky, slightly sweet aroma.
- Coumarins and LignansPresent in smaller amounts.
Applications
- Sleep and night-time relaxation supplements
- Stress and calm-mind Ayurvedic formulas with brahmi, shankhpushpi or ashwagandha
- Memory and focus blends
- Hair wellness supplements, following traditional use
- Private label Ayurvedic ranges
Formulation Options
We can fill capsules with Jatamansi root powder or with a concentrated extract. Typical fills are 250 mg to 500 mg per capsule in gelatin or vegetarian shells. Because the aroma is strong and the oil is volatile, finished capsules should be kept in tightly closed containers away from heat.
Sustainability Matters
Nardostachys jatamansi is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN and is included in CITES Appendix II, which regulates international trade. Wild populations have been heavily overharvested. We work only with suppliers who can provide legal origin documentation and, where possible, cultivated material. Export shipments may need CITES paperwork, which we can help arrange.
Safety Notes
Jatamansi may cause drowsiness and may add to the effect of sedatives, sleep medicines and alcohol. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. People on medication for anxiety, depression or blood pressure should consult a doctor before use.
Quality Considerations
- Nardostachys jatamansi identity, as other roots are sometimes substituted
- Legal and traceable sourcing, with CITES compliance for export
- Volatile oil content and aroma
- Moisture, foreign matter, heavy metals and microbiology
- Batch consistency and Certificate of Analysis
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Keep CITES and origin documents on file for Jatamansi, as buyers and customs may ask for them.
