Horsechestnut Hcn Capsules
Part of our Capsules range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Horse Chestnut Capsules are herbal supplements made with standardised extract from the seeds of Aesculus hippocastanum. The extract is best known for aescin (escin), a group of saponins used in products that support healthy veins and circulation in the legs.
Arizone International manufactures and supplies Horse Chestnut Capsules with aescin-standardised, purified extract, for nutraceutical brands, vein and circulation product companies and private label businesses.
About Horse Chestnut
The horse chestnut is a large, handsome tree native to the Balkans and widely planted in parks and avenues across Europe. In spring it carries tall white flower spikes, and in autumn it drops shiny brown seeds, called conkers in Britain, inside spiky green husks. Despite the name, it is not related to the sweet chestnut, and its raw seeds are not edible.
The name may come from the old Turkish practice of feeding the seeds to horses with coughs, or from the horseshoe-shaped scar left on the twig when a leaf falls.
Raw Seeds Are Toxic
Raw horse chestnut seeds, bark, flowers and leaves contain esculin, a compound that can be poisonous. Commercial extracts are processed to remove esculin while keeping aescin. This is why only properly manufactured, standardised horse chestnut seed extract should be used in supplements, never raw seed powder.
What the Extract Contains
- Aescin (Escin)A mix of triterpene saponins. Extracts are commonly standardised to 16% to 20% aescin, and purified grades are also available.
- FlavonoidsSuch as quercetin and kaempferol glycosides.
- CoumarinsRemoved or reduced to very low levels in good extracts.
Applications
Horse chestnut seed extract has been studied in several clinical trials for symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency, such as heavy, tired or swollen legs, and European herbal monographs recognise it for this use. Capsules are used in:
- Leg comfort and vein wellness supplements
- Circulation support blends with diosmin, grape seed or butcher's broom
- Products for people who stand or sit for long periods
- Private label circulation ranges
Formulation Options
A common dose in research is 100 mg to 150 mg of aescin per day, usually from about 250 mg to 300 mg of standardised extract taken twice daily. Delayed-release or enteric-coated capsules are often used to reduce stomach upset. Gelatin and vegetarian shells, bottles and blisters are available.
Safety Notes
Horse chestnut may increase the risk of bleeding and may affect blood sugar, so people on blood thinners or diabetes medicines should consult a doctor. It is not recommended for people with kidney or liver disease, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for children. Leg swelling can have serious causes, so anyone with sudden or painful swelling should see a doctor.
Quality Considerations
- Aesculus hippocastanum seed extract identity
- Aescin content by HPLC
- Esculin removed to safe limits
- Heavy metals, residual solvents and microbiology
- Batch consistency and Certificate of Analysis
