Hibiscus Capsules
Part of our Capsules range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Hibiscus Capsules are herbal supplements made from the deep red calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa, also known as roselle. Brewed as a tangy, ruby-coloured tea, hibiscus is loved across Africa, the Caribbean, Mexico and Asia. In capsule form, it offers the same plant compounds in a simple, measured dose.
Arizone International manufactures and supplies Hibiscus Capsules with calyx powder or extract, for nutraceutical brands, heart and wellness companies, and private label businesses.
Roselle, Not the Garden Hibiscus
Many people picture the large red garden hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) used in Indian temples and in hair oils. Hibiscus sabdariffa is a different plant. What is harvested is not the petal but the fleshy red calyx that surrounds the seed pod after the flower falls. In India, roselle is known as gongura in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where its sour leaves are used in the famous gongura pickle, and as lal ambadi in Maharashtra.
In Egypt and Sudan, hibiscus tea is called karkadé. In Mexico and the Caribbean it is known as agua de Jamaica or sorrel and is drunk cold, often at festivals and Christmas.
What Hibiscus Contains
- AnthocyaninsMainly delphinidin-3-sambubioside and cyanidin-3-sambubioside, which give the deep red colour.
- Organic AcidsIncluding hibiscus acid, citric acid and malic acid, responsible for the sour taste.
- Polyphenols and FlavonoidsSuch as quercetin and protocatechuic acid.
- Polysaccharides and MineralsPresent in smaller amounts.
Applications
Several small human studies have looked at hibiscus tea for healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels, with encouraging results. Hibiscus Capsules are used in:
- Heart and healthy blood pressure support supplements
- Antioxidant and anthocyanin-rich formulas
- Weight-management and metabolic blends
- Liver wellness formulas
- Private label wellness ranges
Formulation Options
We can fill capsules with finely milled hibiscus calyx powder or with an extract standardised to anthocyanins or polyphenols. Typical fills are 400 mg to 500 mg per capsule. Because hibiscus is acidic and hygroscopic, we recommend HPMC capsules and moisture-protective packaging.
Safety Notes
Hibiscus may lower blood pressure and blood sugar, so people on medication for these conditions should consult a doctor. It is traditionally avoided during pregnancy because it may affect the uterus. It may interact with some medicines, including certain anti-malarial drugs and diuretics.
Quality Considerations
- Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx identity, not rosa-sinensis petals
- Anthocyanin content and colour value
- Moisture, acidity and foreign matter
- Microbiology, heavy metals and pesticide residues
- Batch consistency and Certificate of Analysis
Hibiscus calyx powder has a vivid red colour that can stain equipment and packaging, so we fill it on cleaned lines and use capsules that fully contain the powder. Clear capsules show off the colour, while opaque capsules protect the anthocyanins from light.
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Hibiscus is rich in anthocyanins, so capsules can have a deep red colour inside. Labels often advise people on blood pressure medicines to consult their doctor.
