Haritaki Capsules are Ayurvedic herbal supplements made from the dried fruit of Terminalia chebula. In Ayurvedic texts Haritaki is praised above almost every other herb, and it is often called the "king of medicines". It is also the most important of the three fruits in Triphala.

Arizone International manufactures and supplies Haritaki Capsules with fruit powder or extract, for Ayurvedic brands, digestive wellness companies and private label businesses.

The King of Medicines

Terminalia chebula is a medium to large tree found in forests across India, Nepal and Southeast Asia. The fruit is a wrinkled, olive-shaped drupe that turns yellowish-brown to black when dried. In Tibetan medicine, the Medicine Buddha is often shown holding a Haritaki fruit, a sign of how highly it is regarded.

The Charaka Samhita compares Haritaki to a mother, saying it cares for the body as a mother cares for a child. It is described as balancing all three doshas, with a special affinity for the digestive tract. Traditionally, it is used for regular bowel movements, digestion and as a general Rasayana.

What Haritaki Contains

  • Hydrolysable TanninsIncluding chebulagic acid, chebulinic acid and corilagin, which make up a large part of the fruit.
  • Gallic Acid and Ellagic AcidKey phenolic markers used in quality testing.
  • Anthraquinone-Like CompoundsLinked to the fruit's traditional gentle laxative action.
  • FlavonoidsPresent in smaller amounts.

Applications

  • Digestive regularity and gentle bowel support supplements
  • Triphala and custom three-fruit blends
  • Detox and cleansing formulas
  • Oral-care and gum wellness products
  • Ayurvedic Rasayana and healthy-ageing products
  • Private label single-herb Ayurvedic ranges

Formulation Options

Haritaki is intensely astringent and slightly bitter, so capsules are a far more pleasant option than powder in water. We can fill capsules with de-seeded fruit powder (pericarp only) or with an extract standardised to tannins or chebulinic acid. Typical fills are 400 mg to 500 mg per capsule in gelatin or HPMC shells.

Safety Notes

Haritaki is traditionally avoided during pregnancy. It may cause loose stools at higher doses. People who are dehydrated, very weak or fasting, and those on diabetes medicine, should seek advice before use.

Quality Considerations

  • Terminalia chebula identity and use of pericarp without seed
  • Tannin and gallic acid content where specified
  • Moisture, ash, acid-insoluble ash and foreign matter
  • Heavy metals, pesticides and microbial limits
  • Batch consistency and Certificate of Analysis

Haritaki fruits are graded by size and origin in Indian markets, with some regional types valued more than others. We select mature, well-dried fruits and remove the hard seed before milling, which gives a cleaner, more consistent powder for encapsulation.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Haritaki has a mild laxative effect, so labels often suggest taking it at bedtime. It is also a key part of Triphala, so we can make single-herb or Triphala capsules to your recipe.
