About Griffonia
Griffonia simplicifolia grows wild in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo and neighbouring countries. It produces flat, black seed pods, and the seeds inside are collected by local communities, mostly from wild plants. Traditionally, parts of the plant were used in West African folk medicine, but its international importance began when researchers discovered how much 5-HTP the seeds contain, often in the range of several percent of seed weight.
What Is 5-HTP?
5-HTP is an amino acid made naturally in the body from tryptophan, which comes from protein foods. The body converts 5-HTP into serotonin, a messenger involved in mood, appetite and sleep, and serotonin in turn is used to make melatonin. Unlike tryptophan, 5-HTP is not found in meaningful amounts in ordinary foods, so Griffonia seed is the main commercial source.

Formulation Options

Important Safety Notes
5-HTP should not be combined with antidepressants (such as SSRIs, SNRIs or MAO inhibitors), triptans, tramadol or other medicines that raise serotonin, because of the risk of a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for children. Some people experience nausea or drowsiness. Labels should clearly advise consumers to consult a healthcare professional, especially if they take any prescription medicine.
Quality Considerations
In the late 1980s and 1990s, a contaminant known as "Peak X" was found in some 5-HTP products and raised safety concerns. Good-quality manufacturing and purification address this.
