About Echinacea
The name Echinacea comes from the Greek "echinos", meaning hedgehog, a nod to the prickly central cone. Native American Plains peoples used echinacea more than any other medicinal plant, for wounds, snakebites, toothaches and sore throats. European settlers adopted it, and in the early twentieth century it was one of the most popular remedies in America. Later, German researchers studied it extensively, and it remains a household herb in Germany.
Three species are used commercially: Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea pallida. Purpurea is the most widely cultivated and the easiest to grow.
