Chaga Mushroom Capsules
Part of our Capsules range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Chaga Mushroom Capsules are functional mushroom supplements made from Inonotus obliquus, a fungus that grows on birch trees in cold northern forests. Chaga does not look like a typical mushroom at all. It forms a hard, black, cracked mass on the trunk that looks more like burnt charcoal, with a rusty orange interior.
Arizone International manufactures and supplies Chaga Mushroom Capsules, alone or in multi-mushroom blends, for nutraceutical brands, private label companies and distributors.
What Is Chaga?
Chaga grows mainly on birch in Russia, Siberia, Scandinavia, Canada and the northern United States. What people harvest is technically a sterile mass called a sclerotium, not a fruiting body. It grows slowly over many years. In Russian and Siberian folk tradition, chaga was broken into chunks and brewed as a tea, and it was often drunk in place of coffee or regular tea in rural areas. Alexander Solzhenitsyn's novel "Cancer Ward" helped make chaga known outside Russia.
Because chaga grows on birch, it takes up compounds from the tree, including betulin and betulinic acid from birch bark.
What Chaga Contains
- Polysaccharides and Beta-GlucansThe main markers used to standardise chaga extracts.
- TriterpenesIncluding inotodiol, lanosterol, betulin and betulinic acid.
- Melanin and PolyphenolsChaga's dark colour comes from melanin pigments, and it scores very high on laboratory antioxidant tests.
- MineralsPresent in varying amounts.
Applications
- Functional mushroom supplements
- Immune and seasonal wellness products
- Antioxidant and healthy-ageing blends
- Multi-mushroom formulas with reishi, lion's mane, cordyceps or turkey tail
- Private label and e-commerce wellness ranges
Chaga products should be positioned as supplements, with claims that follow the rules of each market.
Formulation Options
Chaga's cell walls are tough, so a simple powder is poorly digested. We recommend hot-water or dual (water and alcohol) extracts, standardised to polysaccharides or beta-glucans, for a more useful product. Capsules usually contain 400 mg to 500 mg of extract, in vegetarian HPMC or gelatin shells.
Safety Notes
Chaga is naturally high in oxalates. Long-term, high-dose use has been linked to kidney problems in a few reported cases, so it should be used in moderate amounts and avoided by people with kidney disease. Chaga may also affect blood sugar and blood clotting, so people on diabetes medicines or blood thinners should seek medical advice first.
Quality Considerations
- Confirmed Inonotus obliquus identity
- Wild sclerotium or cultivated mycelium, clearly stated
- Beta-glucan content by a recognised method, as starch can inflate total polysaccharide results
- Heavy metals, microbiology and pesticide residues
- Moisture and batch consistency
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask whether the chaga is wild-harvested or cultivated, and choose a hot water extract for better availability of beta-glucans. Chaga is high in oxalates, so labels should advise people with kidney problems to consult their doctor.
