Bladderwrack Capsules are marine supplements made from Fucus vesiculosus, a brown seaweed that grows on rocky shores of the North Atlantic and the North Sea. It is easy to spot at low tide by the small air-filled bladders along its fronds, which keep it floating toward the light. Those bladders give it its name.

Arizone International manufactures and supplies Bladderwrack Capsules, alone or in sea moss blends, for nutraceutical brands, private label businesses and distributors.

A Seaweed With History

Bladderwrack has been harvested in Europe for centuries, for food, animal feed and fertiliser. It holds a notable place in medical history too. In the early 1800s, the element iodine was discovered in seaweed ash, and burnt seaweed had long been used for goitre, a swelling of the thyroid caused by iodine deficiency. Bladderwrack remains one of the best known natural sources of iodine.

Today it is popular in "sea moss" formulas, where it is combined with Irish sea moss (Chondrus crispus) and burdock root, a trio promoted widely on social media.

What Bladderwrack Contains

  • IodineNaturally present, often in high and variable amounts.
  • FucoidanA sulphated polysaccharide unique to brown seaweeds and widely researched.
  • AlginatesSoluble fibres that form a gel with water.
  • MineralsIncluding magnesium, calcium, potassium and trace elements.
  • PhlorotanninsPolyphenols found in brown algae.

Applications

  • Sea moss, bladderwrack and burdock blends
  • Thyroid and iodine support supplements (within safe limits)
  • Mineral and "ocean greens" formulas
  • Weight-management blends as a fibre source
  • Private label and e-commerce wellness ranges

Iodine Must Be Controlled

The most important quality point for bladderwrack is iodine content. Seaweed iodine levels can vary many times over depending on where and when it was harvested. Too little makes a product ineffective, but too much can upset thyroid function. We test iodine in every batch and help you set a fill weight that keeps the daily dose within the limits of your target market. Iodine per serving should always appear on the label.

Heavy Metal Screening

Seaweeds absorb minerals from seawater, including arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. We test for all of these, including inorganic arsenic where required, and only use material that meets supplement limits.

Safety Notes

People with thyroid conditions, those taking thyroid medication, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use bladderwrack without medical advice. It may also interact with blood thinners because of its fucoidan content.

Formulation Options

We can fill capsules with bladderwrack powder or extract, alone or blended with sea moss, burdock root, spirulina or kelp. Gelatin and vegetarian HPMC shells, bottles, blisters and bulk packing are available.

Tips for Buyers and Formulators

Iodine content in seaweed varies, so ask for iodine results on every batch and set the dose so the daily iodine stays within safe limits.
