Beta Carotene Capsules
Part of our Capsules range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Beta-Carotene Capsules are nutritional supplements that provide beta-carotene, the orange pigment found in carrots, sweet potatoes, mangoes and green leafy vegetables. The body can convert beta-carotene into vitamin A as needed, which is why it is often called provitamin A.
Arizone International manufactures and supplies Beta-Carotene Capsules for nutraceutical brands, multivitamin makers, private label businesses and distributors, using natural or nature-identical beta-carotene to your specification.
What Is Beta-Carotene?
Beta-carotene belongs to the carotenoid family, a group of more than 600 natural pigments made by plants, algae and some microbes. It was first isolated from carrots in the nineteenth century, and the word "carotene" comes from the Latin name for carrot. When the body needs vitamin A, it splits beta-carotene into retinal, which is then used for vision, skin and immune function. Because this conversion is regulated, beta-carotene from food does not cause vitamin A toxicity the way high doses of preformed vitamin A can.
Sources of Beta-Carotene
- Algal Beta-CaroteneFrom the microalga Dunaliella salina, grown in salty ponds. It contains a natural mix of isomers and other carotenoids.
- Palm Fruit CarotenoidsExtracted from red palm oil and rich in mixed carotenoids.
- Fermentation-DerivedProduced by the fungus Blakeslea trispora.
- Nature-IdenticalSynthetic beta-carotene with the same structure, widely used in fortification.
Applications
- Multivitamin and multimineral capsules
- Eye-health formulas with lutein and zeaxanthin
- Skin and "sun-season" beauty supplements
- Antioxidant blends with vitamins C and E and selenium
- Immune wellness products
- Private label nutrition ranges
Formulation Options
Beta-carotene is sensitive to light, heat and oxygen, so it is almost always used in a stabilised form. We can make capsules with beta-carotene beadlets (for example 10% or 20% CWS grades) in hard capsules, or with 30% oil suspension in softgels. Doses are usually expressed as milligrams of beta-carotene or micrograms of retinol activity equivalents, and should be set within local regulatory limits.
Important Safety Note
Two large studies in the 1990s, known as ATBC and CARET, found that high-dose beta-carotene supplements increased the risk of lung cancer in smokers and in people exposed to asbestos. For this reason, many regulators require a warning that high-dose beta-carotene products are not suitable for smokers. Very high intake can also turn the skin slightly yellow-orange, a harmless condition called carotenodermia that fades when intake is reduced. Pregnant women should follow medical advice on vitamin A sources.
Quality Considerations
- Source of beta-carotene (algal, palm, fermentation or nature-identical)
- Assay of all-trans beta-carotene and isomers
- Stabilisation form (beadlet or oil suspension) and antioxidant system
- Stability testing across shelf life
- Heavy metals, microbiology and solvent residues
- Opaque, oxygen-protective packaging
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Beta-carotene is sensitive to light and air, so softgels or beadlet-filled capsules in opaque bottles keep it stable. Include the smokers' warning required in many markets.
