Artichoke Capsules
Part of our Capsules range, manufactured and exported by Arizone International LLP.
Artichoke Capsules are digestive and liver wellness supplements made from the leaves of the globe artichoke, Cynara scolymus. The edible artichoke head is a well-loved Mediterranean vegetable, but herbalists have always favoured the bitter green leaves, which carry the highest concentration of the plant's active compounds.
Arizone International manufactures and supplies Artichoke Leaf Capsules for nutraceutical brands, private label businesses and distributors, with extract standardisation and packaging set to your requirement.
About Globe Artichoke
The globe artichoke is a large thistle, closely related to the cardoon, grown mostly in Italy, Spain, France and Egypt. What we eat is actually the flower bud, picked before it opens. If left on the plant, it opens into a striking purple thistle flower. The leaves are large, grey-green and deeply cut, and they taste sharply bitter.
In European folk medicine, artichoke leaf was taken after heavy meals. Modern herbal monographs in Europe still list artichoke leaf for symptoms of indigestion such as fullness, bloating and flatulence.
Key Compounds
- Caffeoylquinic AcidsIncluding chlorogenic acid and cynarin, the main markers used to standardise artichoke extracts.
- FlavonoidsSuch as luteolin and its glycosides.
- Sesquiterpene LactonesIncluding cynaropicrin, responsible for the bitter taste.
- InulinPresent mainly in the bud and root, less so in the leaf.
How Artichoke Capsules Are Used
Artichoke leaf is believed to support bile flow, which helps with the digestion of fats. For this reason it appears in products like:
- Digestive comfort supplements taken with meals
- Liver wellness and "detox" formulas with milk thistle, dandelion or turmeric
- Healthy cholesterol support blends
- Gallbladder and bile support formulas
- Private label digestive ranges
Claims must follow the rules of the target market, and artichoke should be positioned as a supplement rather than a treatment.
Formulation Options
We can fill capsules with artichoke leaf powder or with a dry extract standardised to caffeoylquinic acids, commonly 2.5% to 5% cynarin or 5% to 15% chlorogenic acid depending on the test method. Extract doses of around 300 mg to 600 mg per capsule are common. Gelatin and vegetarian HPMC capsules, bottles, blisters and bulk packs are available.
Safety Notes
Artichoke should not be used by people with gallstones or bile duct obstruction unless advised by a doctor, because it may increase bile flow. People allergic to plants in the daisy family, such as chrysanthemums, marigolds or ragweed, may react to artichoke. Pregnant and nursing women should seek advice before use.
Quality Considerations
- Cynara scolymus leaf identity
- Marker content by a stated method (HPLC or UV)
- Extract ratio, carrier and solvent residues
- Moisture, heavy metals, pesticides and microbial load
- Capsule fill weight and batch consistency
Tips for Buyers and Formulators
Ask for cynarin or caffeoylquinic acid content if you want a standardised artichoke extract.
