What Is Alfalfa?
Alfalfa, also called lucerne, is a perennial legume from the pea family. Its name is often traced to an Arabic phrase meaning "father of all foods", a sign of how highly it was valued. The plant sends roots very deep into the soil, sometimes several metres, which helps it draw up minerals and survive dry spells. In India it is known as rijka or lasunghas and is grown mainly as green fodder in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Maharashtra.
For supplements, the leaves are harvested before full flowering, when their nutrient content is highest, and dried quickly to keep their green colour.

Safety Notes for Labels
Because alfalfa is rich in vitamin K, people taking warfarin or similar blood thinners should not use it without medical advice. Alfalfa seeds and sprouts contain L-canavanine, which has been linked to flare-ups in people with lupus and other autoimmune conditions, so these groups should also avoid it. Pregnant women should consult a doctor due to its plant oestrogen content.
