In short: private label manufacturing means a manufacturer makes a supplement and packs it under your brand. You choose the formula, the capsule, the bottle and the label. The manufacturer handles production, testing, packing and export. Many brands in the USA, the UK, Europe and Australia work with Indian manufacturers because India grows many of the herbs used in supplements and has a large, experienced manufacturing base.
Private label vs custom formulation: which do you need?
- Private label (ready formula): you pick an existing formula from the manufacturer's catalogue, such as ashwagandha capsules, curcumin with piperine or vitamin D capsules, and put your label on it. This is the fastest and lowest-risk way to launch.
- Custom formulation: you want your own blend, dose or format. The R&D team develops it, makes pilot samples and then scales up. It takes longer, but the product is unique to you. See custom formulation.
How the process works, step by step
- Brief: tell the manufacturer the product, the dose, the format, the target market and the quantity.
- Quote and samples: you receive a price, the specifications and samples to check.
- Packaging and label: choose the bottle, pouch or blister, the count per pack and the label. We help check that the label includes the information your market asks for, such as ingredients, dosage, warnings and batch details. Final label approval stays with you, the brand owner.
- Production: raw materials are tested, the product is made and packed, and the finished batch is tested before release.
- Documents and shipping: each batch comes with a certificate of analysis. Goods ship with the export documents to your warehouse, your distributor or an Amazon fulfilment centre.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
MOQ depends on the product, the capsule type, and the packaging, especially printed labels and custom bottles. Many new brands start with a smaller first order to test the market, then move the same formula to larger runs as sales grow. The quickest way to get a real number is to share your product, pack size and expected yearly volume.
Plan your first order around what you can sell before the product's best-before date, not around the lowest price per unit. Unsold stock is the most expensive stock.
Choosing the format and packaging
- Capsules: vegetarian HPMC or gelatin, usually size 0 or 00. Read our guide to HPMC vs gelatin capsules.
- Powders: for drink mixes and superfood blends, packed in stand-up pouches or jars.
- Packs: HDPE or PET bottles of 30 to 180 capsules, blister packs, or bulk in food-grade bags inside cartons.
What to check before choosing a manufacturer
- Facility certificates, such as ISO 22000, GMP and HACCP, plus any registration your market needs, such as US FDA facility registration
- A certificate of analysis for every batch, and the option to send samples to your own lab
- Experience exporting to your country, and with the documents your importer needs
- Clear communication on lead times, MOQ and packaging before you pay a deposit

Selling on Amazon?
If you sell on Amazon, ask whether the manufacturer can do FBA prep. That includes FNSKU labels, bundling and Amazon-compliant cartons, done in the same order. It saves you a separate prep company and gets your stock live sooner. See Amazon FBA prep.
