About Roman Chamomile
Roman chamomile is a low-growing perennial herb with feathery leaves and white daisy-like flowers. It is native to western Europe and North Africa. Despite its name, it is linked less with Rome and more with England, where it was once planted as fragrant lawns that released a sweet scent when walked on. The name "chamomile" comes from Greek words meaning "earth apple", because of its apple-like smell. Today, the oil is produced mainly in England, France, Belgium, Hungary and Chile.
Roman vs German Chamomile
Roman and German chamomile are different plants and produce very different oils. German chamomile oil is deep blue and herbaceous and is rich in chamazulene and bisabolol. Roman chamomile oil is pale yellow to light blue, has a sweeter, fruitier scent, and is made up mostly of esters. Roman chamomile is often preferred in aromatherapy and perfumery for its scent, while German chamomile is often preferred in skin care.
Aroma and Composition
- Angelate EstersSuch as isobutyl angelate and isoamyl angelate, which make up a large part of the oil and give the sweet, fruity, apple-like scent.
- Butyrate and Methacrylate EstersAdd to the fruity character.
- Pinocarvone and Other ComponentsContribute a herbal note.
Applications
- Aromatherapy blends for relaxation and restful sleep
- Massage oils and bath products
- Gentle skin care and baby care products
- Hair rinses and shampoos, especially for fair hair
- Fine perfumery, adding a fruity, herbal note
- Pillow sprays and relaxation products
Traditional Use
Roman chamomile has a long history in European herbal tradition as a calming herb. In aromatherapy, it is often chosen for relaxation blends because of its gentle, pleasant scent. These are traditional uses and not medical claims.
Safety and Dilution
Roman chamomile oil is considered one of the gentler essential oils, but it should still be diluted before skin use. People allergic to the daisy family (Asteraceae) may react to it. A patch test is recommended. Not for internal use. Pregnant women should seek advice before use. Keep out of reach of children.
Blending Tips
Roman chamomile blends well with lavender, bergamot, clary sage, geranium, rose, neroli, ylang-ylang and mandarin. It is powerful, so a small amount goes a long way.
